Upper Ganga Canal Expressway Work to commence in April
Feb 13th
The Uttar Pradesh government plans to construct a 170-km expressway along the Upper Ganga Canal in partnership with IL&FS-IDC. Work on the project is likely to commence in April this year after the preliminary survey and bidding process is complete.
Decks have been cleared for the construction of the 170-km-long 8-lane restricted entry expressway from near Dehra in Ghaziabad to Purkazi in Uttarakhand. Work on the construction of the Upper Ganga Canal Expressway, previously known as Hindon Expressway is expected to start in April after the requests for qualification and proposal are finalised and a developer selected. The expressway will facilitate traffic movement and expedite industrial development in the state.
The Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) and Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) and Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDC), the consultant for the project signed an agreement for the expressway recently. What is interesting is that sufficient land for the expressway is already available with the state irrigation department, so land acquisition will not be a bottleneck, as has been the case with other infrastructure projects in the state.
It may be mentioned that the Uttar Pradesh government had, late last year, changed the route of the proposed eight-lane expressway, by aligning it with the Upper Ganga Canal instead of the Hindon river, to sidetrack the problems associated with land acquisition on the original route. The new route is shorter than the original one, which was supposed to be 250 km long.
